The Daily

The Daily turns a chosen stream of newsletter-style email into a paginated reading book for the selected day. You handle mail as reading — with a start, an end, and Archive — instead of as another live inbox.

This page is conceptual. IMAP hostnames, ports, and passwords belong in Settings → Email Settings and a future setup guide.

What The Daily is

Each Daily is a paginated book made from the newsletter messages selected for that day. Chapters are individual messages: subject as title, cleaned HTML body, sender line, and an Email actions control for follow-up in your mail client.

Books are named for that day (for example a Daily title dated for the session). You open them like any other Weekly Edition book: page through, track progress, Archive when finished.

The Daily is a local, on-device process that turns newsletter email into a book you configure and generate when you want a reading session. Keep using your primary email app for ordinary mail; The Daily is for reading the newsletters you file into a dedicated folder.

Which email it is meant for

Under Settings → Email Settings, you connect via IMAP (password-based login). Provider templates are available for common hosts, or you can use a custom server.

The app asks for a mailbox (IMAP folder). The product intent is a dedicated folder for newsletters and similar reading mail — not your main inbox.

In-app guidance is explicit: the folder should not be your everyday inbox; create or choose one where you already filter newsletters (or forward them). That keeps pruning focused and avoids pulling personal correspondence into a reading book.

Tip

Many people use a free or secondary IMAP account, or rules that file newsletters into a folder The Weekly Edition reads. Primary inbox privacy stays with your main mail client.

Privacy: IMAP runs on your device. The Weekly Edition does not operate a mail server that receives your credentials or mail body on your behalf.

How newsletter material becomes a reading book

When you generate a Daily for the selected day:

1. The app opens the configured IMAP mailbox on the device.
2. It looks for messages that still need attention for that day (so already-handled mail is not re-pulled).
3. Each message is cleaned into reader-friendly HTML.
4. Chapters are assembled into a Daily book.
5. The book can open in the reader, appear on the home list, and upload via WebDAV when Cloud Storage is configured.

Each chapter includes an Email actions link. Choosing Action there marks the underlying message as needing attention in IMAP, so you can follow up in your real mail client. The book is a reading view; the message still exists in mail.

The weekday rhythm

Daily reading is paced:

• Emails to read per day (1–5) sets a target batch size so one book stays manageable.
• You can generate books for earlier days when backlog exists.
• Download another (Email Settings) builds one more Daily from the next available day and returns you to home.

A calm week looks like:

1. Newsletters land in the dedicated folder during the day.
2. You generate (or open) a Daily book when you have reading time.
3. You page through, optionally flag a message for later action, then Archive the book.
4. The next day you open the next book rather than reopening an open-ended unread list.

Sunday cleanup still cares about email progress (for example unfinished Daily targets) as part of closing out the week, alongside feeds and queues — see Closing the week.

What you still decide

You remain in charge of the Daily workflow:

• You choose the mail provider and newsletter folder.
• You decide how many messages belong in each Daily.
• You choose when to generate another book.
• You decide which messages require follow-up in your mail client.
• You enable WebDAV when you want books on another device.

Daily books are generated on demand after you configure IMAP and choose to create one. You generate each Daily when you are ready to read it.

Setting up The Daily

A dedicated IMAP setup guide will cover providers, app passwords, folder creation, and troubleshooting. Until then:

1. Open Settings → Email Settings.
2. Pick a provider template or custom server.
3. Choose a newsletter mailbox, not your primary inbox.
4. Set emails to read per day.
5. Save, then generate a Daily from the home workflow when mail is available.

If Email Settings shows an error indicator, fix the connection before expecting new Daily books.
